Congratulations to Sunnyside Intermediate!
Sunnyside Intermediate placed first among 14 Indiana schools competing in a video contest in March. As part of Indiana’s 2013 USDA Team Nutrition grant, these schools participated in a contest to create videos highlighting their School Lunch and/or School Breakfast program. Schools were instructed to emphasize Smarter Lunchroom principles http://smarterlunchrooms.org/ and theHealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) http://www.fns.usda.gov/hussc/healthierus-school-challenge-smarter-lunchrooms . The Smarter Lunchroom principles include low to no cost methods for increasing student consumption of fruits, vegetables and healthy meal options. To implement the HUSSC, schools incorporate school-wide policies, activities and events that promote a healthier school environment.
The Indiana Association of School Broadcasters (IASB) partnered with the Indiana Department of Education’s Division of School and Community Nutrition by promoting the grant activity and providing technical support for video development and production.  The IASB is an organization for high school and college instructors who support professional excellence in the area of media education.
Judges from IASB and the Indiana Department of Education evaluated the films based on creativity, level of interest, light and sound, continuity, and meeting content expectations. Judges commented on the “mouth-watering salads” and quality sandwiches and “to go” items. They also felt the videos were very educational! Foodservice staff shared that it was a great experience to work with the students and they learned marketing techniques that are more appealing to students.
While Sunnyside received the highest contest score, the other school videos were also creative, informative and engaging. Congratulations to the following participants who submitted videos: Laurel Elementary/Jr. High (Franklin County Schools); West Central Elementary & West Central Middle/High (West Central Schools); Madison Primary Center (South Bend Schools); Green Meadows Intermediate Elementary (Frankfort Schools); Harding Elementary, O’Bannon Elementary and Jefferson Elementary (Hammond Schools); Joan Martin elementary, Liberty Elementary, Ridgeview Elementary, Hobart High School and Hobart Middle School (Hobart Schools).
